Hotel managers and travelers in Brookings prepare for storm

Posted: Updated:

With a blizzard warning across most of the state, many hotels along the interstate are gearing up for the possibility of road closures and a lot of stranded travelers.

The Super 8 in Brookings knows to take a blizzard warning very seriously.  When winter weather shut down Interstate 29 in December, all 590 hotel rooms in Brookings were filled, along with a good deal of floor space.

"I came in at night and found that we had 16 girls and their coach sleeping on the floor right here in our breakfast room," said Super 8 General Manager Debra Pieschke.

Some vendors in town for the Brookings Home Show are already booking rooms just in case.

"I decided to get a motel room for another night so if the weather does hit I have a place to stay cause if it's bad I'm not traveling. I'll just wait, eventually it will pass," said Aberdeen resident Bruce Martin.

But in the mean time, Peischke knows hotel guests will need more than just a safe place to stay.

"We stocked up extra on Breakfast of course and probably make another trip to the grocery store and maybe buy some sandwich meat so incase it gets worse and they do close all of the restaurants, then we'll have something to give our guests to eat," said Peischke.

Along with Basic necessities, Pieschke also has entertainment like cards, board games and movies on hand to try and keep her guests' minds off the storm.

"They're scared, they're been accidents, they've seen people in the middle of the road, they just need some reassurance that they're safe," said Pieschke.

For those who have already planned ahead, it's just a matter of passing the time.

‘I'll just watch TV; hopefully there's something good on," said Martin.
