Pheasants Re-sign Taylor

Posted: Updated:

SIOUX FALLS – The Sioux Falls Pheasants inked utility player Jake Taylor to a 2013 contract on Monday while trading pitcher Pete Gehle to the Winnipeg Goldeyes in exchange for future considerations. They also released infielder Joe Anthonsen.

The 26-year-old Taylor hit .268 with three home runs and 27 RBI in 2012, his first campaign in Sioux Falls and third professional season. He led the team with five triples and collected 72 hits in 74 games. Defensively, Taylor showed versatility by playing at five different positions -- catcher, second base, third base, shortstop and left field.

"Jake is very valuable to our club, because he is a tremendous utility player," Pheasants manager Steve Shirley said. "We feel good about using him in a number of situations."

Taylor, a native of Moreno Valley, Calif., is a .256 career hitter with seven home runs and 52 RBI. He played previously with the Grand Prairie AirHogs and the Oakland County Cruisers of the independent Frontier League.

Gehle went 6-10 with a 5.50 ERA in 18 starts with the Pheasants in 2012, his lone season in Sioux Falls. As a staff workhorse, he logged 104 2/3 innings and struck out 54 batters.

Anthonsen played four straight seasons in Sioux Falls (2009-2012), primarily as the Pheasants' leadoff hitter and second baseman. He concluded 2012 as the franchise leader in runs scored (238) and walks (238).  He is tied for second all-time in career hits (413) and is second in games played (373). Last season he hit .248 with 22 RBI.

The Sioux Falls Pheasants begin their 21st season on May 16, 2013. Their home opener is May 17 against the Sioux City Explorers. Information about season tickets and advertising with the Sioux Falls Pheasants is available by calling (605) 336-6060 or visiting www.sfpheasants.com.
