While Twitter is bursting with tweets about Pope Benedict XVI's resignation, his own account has remained silent.
Speaking in Latin, Pope Benedict XVI announced his resignation Monday. The news was quickly broken thanks to an Italian reporter who speaks Latin.
News of the Pope's resignation ignited a growing trend in the Twitterverse. KSFY News found Monday morning that when you search "pope" in Tweetdeck the updates move so quickly they are not readable.
Meanwhile, the Pope's twitter account, @Pontifex, was completely dormant Monday. His last tweet was posted February 10: "We must trust in the mighty power of God's mercy. We are all sinners, but His grace transforms us and makes us new."
The Vatican announced on December 12 that the Pope joined twitter. Besides English, the Pope has seven different accounts for seven different languages: Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, German, Polish, Arabic and French.
Pope Benedict XVI's accounts have tweeted approximately 30 times each, but have gained millions of followers. @Pontifex, the English account, alone gained more than 1.5 million followers.
