Gas tank vandals can cost you more than stolen gas

Posted: Updated:

Some of us may be using a little extra gas in our cars during the winter months.

But a few people in Sioux Falls got behind the wheel this morning and found the needle on empty.

Sioux Falls police are seeing more cases of thieves stealing gas, in one unusual way.

Unfortunately for some drivers, when they got in their cars this morning, they probably weren't going to get very far.

Their gas tanks had a leak, caused by someone who drilled holes in their tanks.

This is the second time in two months police have been called to this apartment complex.

Police say someone or a group of people are drilling holes in tanks, and stealing gas.

Police reported a series of gas tank vandals in our area since the beginning of the year.

We spoke with Ty Danner service manager at Tires Tires Tires to find out what this could cost should this happen to any one of us.

"You're going to lose a lot of time, probably a lot of money, tow truck bills... Labor is not so terrible on most gas tanks, some of the sport utilities like this one here has got the gas tank up front of a lot of things that need to come out first. This one would be kind of an expensive ordeal here. Normally, a guy might have a two to three hour ordeal just on labor to do a gas tank," Danner said.

Danner tells us it could cost anywhere from $400 to one thousand dollars and up to replace your gas tank.

The final bill would depend on your type of car, and any other damage the gas thieves may cause to your fuel pump or mechanical parts while they drilled into your gas tank.
