Pope Benedict the 16th celebrated his last public mass as a pontiff today..
Looking tired and frail 85-year-old pope walked into a packed St. Peter's Basilica in Rome during the traditional Ash Wednesday service. The pontiff thanked everyone and asked for "special remembrance" and prayers.
At the end of the mass the crowd erupted in a spontaneous ovation and many fought back tears.
The Vatican said today that there will be no formal or symbolic act to mark the pope's resignation. Benedict has already done all that was required to resign under church law by saying he had taken the decision freely.
