South Dakota woman sentenced in asphyxiation death of child

Posted: Updated:

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) - A South Dakota woman has been sentenced to six months in custody and six months of home confinement for the asphyxiation death of a child.

The U.S. Attorney's Office says Kristen Bear Heels, of Mission, caused the death of a child under 7 by overlaying, which involves accidentally rolling over onto the victim.

The 29-year-old Bear Heels pleaded guilty in November to involuntary manslaughter.

U.S. District Judge Roberto Lange also ordered Bear Heels to serve 18 months of probation.
