New phone scam targeting day care centers

Posted: Updated:

A southwest Minnesota sheriff is warning us about a scam targeting childcare providers.

It's a phone scam familiar to police on the east and west coasts, but brand new to our neck of the woods. Pipestone County Sheriff Dan Delaney says over the past week, an unknown caller has contacted daycare centers in Brown, Sibley and Pipestone counties.

The caller claims to be from a diaper company and asks questions about the number of children in the daycare, parents' names and addresses and the childrens' ages. But what remains a mystery to law enforcement is why the caller is seeking this information."It could be to solicit items later...it could be to find out how many children are in the daycare at any given time..whether its for criminal activity or a sales program we don't know."

Delaney says the daycare provider who contacted him today did the right thing - she hung up the phone and called the sheriff's office.
