Brown County considers hiring special investigator

Posted: Updated:

ABERDEEN, S.D. (AP) - Brown County commissioners are considering adding a special investigator to the state's attorney's staff.

Brown County state's attorney Larry Lovrien pitched the idea to commissioners on Tuesday.

The investigator would help with criminal and civil cases.

The duties would include helping to investigate crimes so cases are resolved quickly, making bond recommendations and working on deferred prosecutions. The person hired would also help determine restitution totals, assist attorneys in their preparation for trial and work to recover jail costs.

Lovrien estimated that it could cost the county about $55,000 to hire the person for the first year.

Commissioners Tom Fischbach and Rachel Kippley asked for a week to consider the proposal before taking action.
