Winter storm could improve Sioux Falls streets

Posted: Updated:

Just last week we were talking about preparations for the last blizzard to hit the area. In fact, you can still see remnants of that storm on several residential streets throughout Sioux Falls. Bumpy patches of ice still plague local drivers on their daily route to work.

These areas can be seen on streets, parking lots and driveways throughout the city...some with orange cones cautioning drivers to be careful....

The Sioux Falls Street Department has been using graders to break through some of the worst areas too thick for ice melt or chemicals. The city did not plow out all residential streets after last week's storm brought less than two inches of snow.....but city officials are hoping to see enough snow tomorrow so they can issue a city wide snow alert. Galynn Huber with Sioux Falls Street Department says, "If we do that, we're going to plow the entire city.  If we do that, a lot of those ice ruts will peel off some of that ruff stuff with our motor graters and probably make it a little bit better traveling because we're going to hit every street in the city."

If Sioux Falls doesn't receive more than two inches of snowfall over the next few weeks, these residential streets may not be plowed again as many forecasts show a warm March...in which case the street department would let Mother Nature take care of this ice.
