Sanford opens store designed for child safety at home

Posted: Updated:

We're telling you all the time about new stores and restaurants that are opening up for business here in Sioux Falls.

Add to that list a special kind of store...aimed at families and designed to keep little ones happy and safe.

It's not often that you go shopping at a store and you hear a mom wondering aloud if her home is safe enough for her children.

"That's one of my biggest worries is the choking. So we try to keep all the little things away...."  Well we found one....a special mom....Megan Ringling...talking at a special store...this new Sanford Children's Safety Center.

"We've developed the safety center to be a place where parents can come and get resources about safety in their home...." Kim Overby with Sanford Health says this store focuses on all aspects of the home...safety in the kitchen...the bathroom....the bedroom...all sorts of safety hazards you might not think about...and this store is meant for the entire family. "If a family member wants to come and bring their children and have some education for the children as well as themselves we certainly would encourage that."

And it's not just things you get here...but solid advice as well....Megan Ringling has four kids and remembers when a Sanford educator suggested to her that she get down and crawl around her house...for safety's sake. "One time I found a tiny little magnet from the fridge...and another time I found an almond so you're dropping stuff and you don't know what you're leaving."

So here's what you need to know: the Sanford Children's Safety Center is located at 1115 West 41st Street.
It has dedicated stations for every room of the home.
Employees can demonstrate for you how certain items work so you can child proof your home.
