Snowfall tapering off in eastern South Dakota

Posted: Updated:

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) - A winter storm that moved into eastern South Dakota is tapering off.

National Weather Service meteorologist Kerry Hanko says the Sioux Falls airport accumulated 5.1 inches of snow through Friday morning, but the heaviest amounts in the region were recorded nearly 90 miles south toward Sioux City, Iowa.

The official total there was 8.7 inches, but reports of 10 to 11 inches have come in from the area.

Hanko says eastern South Dakota might see another half inch of accumulation before the snow lightens to flurries.
