Winter storm tapers off eastern South Dakota

Posted: Updated:

From Shawn Cable in the Severe Weather Center: The heavy snow has ended and many folks woke up to a winter wonderland. Snow totals range from over 5 inches in Sioux Falls to almost 10 inches in Sioux City. Light snow will continue through the morning with less than one-quarter to one-half inch of additional accumulation.

A spotter in Marion reported 7.8 inches of snow, residents in Hayes and Hayti each reported 6.4 inches, Pickstown recorded 4 inches and Brookings saw about 3 inches.

Some of the heaviest amounts in the region were recorded nearly 90 miles south toward Sioux City, Iowa. The official total there was 8.7 inches, but reports of 10 to 11 inches have come in from the area.

After a quick break Saturday, our attention turns to another system that could bring accumulating snow late Sunday night, Monday into Tuesday. As of right now, I think that the best chance of snow will be across the very southeastern portion of our KSFY coverage area. Stay tuned for the latest... I'll update my blog with more details as soon as we get today's snowy mess cleaned up.
