UPDATE: FRIDAY MORNING
We now know more about the officer involved shooting that happened in downtown Rapid City Thursday night, including the identity of the man shot.
The man who was ultimately shot by police officer Jerry Moore began his rampage at the Rapid City Public Library. The suspect, Elijah White Magpie allegedly threw one, maybe two rocks through two separate windows at the library.
According to Assistant Chief Karl Jegeris, multiple calls came in that White Magpie had thrown rocks threw the window and had a large butcher knife.
When police arrived on scene, he was walking in the middle of Quincy street, along the 500 block. Jegeris says White Magpie aggressively came at officers with the knife. One of the officers did use his taser but it was not effective. That's when Officer Moore fired 4 to 6 rounds at White Magpie.
Police don't know why White Magpie was agitated. He is listed in critical condition at Rapid City Regional Hospital.
Police did have a short standoff with White Magpie last summer, when he threatened to harm himself with a knife.
UPDATE: 10:00PM
An officer involved shooting in downtown Rapid City sends a male suspect to the hospital.
Rapid City Police say officers responded to a 911 call around 6 PM Thursday evening.
The call came in as an incident on Quincy Street between Fifth and Sixth streets at the Rapid City Public Library. Multiple callers reported that a male subject in his early 20's had thrown a rock through a library window and was in possession of a large knife.
According to the Rapid City Police Department, the subject "aggressively attempted to attack responding officers with a butcher knife."
Officer Jerry Moore, a 25-year veteran of the RCPD, fired several shots to stop the attack.
The subject is currently in critical condition at Rapid City Regional Hospital. The officers were not injured.
"As the investigation proceeds, the division of criminal investigations– DCI will be taking over the investigation. We're waiting for them to have enough people to come in and take over the scene, and then we'll back out," said Captain James Johns, with the Rapid City Police Department.
