How bus drivers navigate Sioux Falls' snow filled streets

Posted: Updated:

Getting around today has had its share of challenges.

But it wasn't just a problem here.

In Kansas City, a city bus took out a light pole as it was trying to maneuver around snow covered streets.

That got us thinking about bus drivers here, and how they deal with the snow.

As South Dakotans, we're all used to driving on a little snow....but even in a car, half a foot of fresh snow can cause some challenges. So it's easy to imagine the difficulties these bus drivers face trying to maneuver a vehicle about three times the size of your average car through slippery city streets all day long.

"It's just a little more trickier than your average day." Cheryl Kramer has been driving a city bus in Sioux Falls for more than seven years. She says a snow day usually slows her down. "I know we're trying to stay on time on our routes, but days like today, the passengers are pretty forgiving." And for good reason....with the number of accidents on the road ways....cautious, defensive driving is the only way Kramer makes it through her bus route safely. "Maybe you'll be driving and you'll see a car come up to a stop sign and you know he's going way too fast, slow down and be prepared."

Good advice for all drivers to follow. In fact, the city bus system takes safety seriously. Kramer says she has several riders on a snowy day like today who leave their own cars safely in the garage and take the bus.

It might take a little longer to get to work, but its one way to make sure you and your car are safe on a snow day.
