After an evening of safety instruction, the class gathered again Saturday afternoon to put training into practice at the Family Park in Sioux Falls.
The weather cooperated nicely for the 20 novice ice fishermen who, under the watchful eye of the instructors, went out onto the ice and dropped lines and lures into the small holes in the ice.
The event was a joint effort between the Siouxland Libraries and the Outdoor Campus to share the instructors' love of ice fishing and to demonstrate safe ice fishing practices.
"You need to know the conditions, so when it gets warmer you need to make sure the ice is appropriately thick. Talk to Game, Fish, and Parks or the police department. Don't take unnecessary risks. Talk to other fishermen and safety is the key. Be cautious and have fun," said Daniel Neeves.
A few of the fishermen got a few bites early in the afternoon.
