Neighbors remember family killed in I-90 crash

Posted: Updated:

People tell KSFY it's a heart-breaking story but incredibly heart-warming to hear so many people say so many good things about their neighbors.

The Vollmers lived on a quiet tree-lined street of well kept homes.

But today, there was a quiet sadness as neighbors shared the news.

As George Krueger explains, word spread fast that this close-knit neighborhood lost one of its most beloved families.

"Our other neighbors came and told us. You can hardly believe it. A house sitting there, with no people in it anymore, and the poor girl, their daughter in college is all alone now," Krueger said.

Other neighbors, like Tammy Klein, expressed concern for Brittany Vollmer, she was away at college when the accident happened.

"She is going to have a lot of growing up to do, very quickly. Unfortunately, there's nobody left for her. She has nobody left for her. It just breaks your heart," Tammy Klein said.

Klein's husband Chris remembers how the Vollmers welcomed them to the neighborhood.

"They came over and talked. They were having a little cookout and pulled us over there. From day one, the very nicest, basically the nest family you could go and talk to," Chris Klein said.

And Krueger remembers seeing the family enjoying their time together.

"They're very nice people. They liked working in the yard, they had a dog that they'd take for walks. The kids were out playing basketball in the driveway all the time, all summer," Krueger said.

Tammy Klein tells us the Vollmers will be missed.

"Caleb is a year older than our daughter. In the summertime they would run around, doing whatever kids that age do. Not having them here is going to be a real void," Tammy Klein said.

Many neighbors have expressed concern for Brittany Vollmer, who is a student at Northwestern College.

The neighbors tell KSFY the Vollmers have family in North Dakota and they expect Brittany's grandparents are on the way to Sioux Falls.
