Fatal crash weighs heavily on first responders

Posted: Updated:

Accidents like Saturday's that claimed the lives of four members of the Vollmer family aren't just difficult for those who knew the victims.

It can also be traumatic for those first responders.

In many cases, agencies like the highway patrol offer critical incident stress de-briefing along with individual and group counseling. Captain Kevin Joffer with the South Dakota Highway Patrol tells KSFY News, "This is a very sad situation, this was hard on my troopers , and I know it was hard on the personnel on the scene. As part of that what we are going to do is the Highway Patrol is going to put together a Critical Incident Debriefing and with the emergency people...the responders that did respond...so they can have an opportunity to discussing what they might be feeling...thing like that and help them cope with that. It was very difficult I know for some of my people."

Incident stress de-briefing is one of the requirements for crews.

It gives them an opportunity for open dialogue about what they saw and how to process it.
