The University of South Dakota banned smoking on their Vermillion campus just a few short months ago.
As of now Northern State University and South Dakota State are the only two public universities in South Dakota that are not smoke free.
However, that could soon change.
The Northern State Student Association has put together a petition that would ban smoking on their Aberdeen campus.
As we head towards the end of February that petition has more than a third of the signatures needed to bring the issue to a campus wide vote.
"Even as an R.A. (residential advisor), before I was student body president, I heard so many times ‘Hey is there anything we can do to become a smoke free campus,'" Kody Kyriss said.
The Northern State Student Association has more than 70 signatures of the 200 needed that would allow a campus wide vote on the option to go smoke free.
"If the University of South Dakota can get this passed, then we should at least try." Kyriss mentioned.
However, some feel the ban could be out of line.
"I don't think it's discriminatory, I understand the health problems for some people," Andrew Perleberg said. "I mean it's my choice to smoke, and I believe it should be my choice to smoke."
While Kyriss is unsure of what the future will hold for on campus smoking, he just wants students to have a voice.
"Its not that we have to make this happen, it's giving the students the option to make this happen."
