Tea fire turns into criminal investigation and drug arrest

Posted: Updated:

An early morning fire in tea turns into a criminal investigation, involving both local and state law enforcement.

KSFY News reporter spoke with some people who live in Tea and are surprised by what investigators found.

This fire investigation involved the Tea Fire and Police departments -- the state Division of Criminal Investigation, and Sioux Falls Drug Task Force.

When fire crews were on the scene they found chemicals which raised their suspicion.

This afternoon police arrested Jesse Raines, 32. He's charged with possession of a controlled substance, manufacturing a controlled substance, maintaining a place for the use or sale of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Zachariah Nankivel has lived in Tea most of his life. This is the first time he's heard of a an incident like this.

"Small town like this is where people go to be out of Sioux Falls where the hustle and bustle of normal city life happens, so I'm very surprised," Nankivel said.

State attorney Tom Wollman tells me Raines was granted a personal recognizance bond but he also has a thousand dollar bond for being a fugitive.

He's wanted on a warrant from Woodbury County, Iowa.
