Schade Winery supplies Iditarod

Posted: Updated:

It is the most popular sports event in Alaska. The top mushers, the drivers of the sleds, and their teams of dogs are treated like celebrities.

"We present one of these (wine bottle) to each one of the mushers. Their pictures are on each of the bottles," said Jim Schade.

Schade and his wife have been attending the Iditarod the past three years. But, they aren't just taking the sled dog race in from the snow packed sidelines.

"It's our fourth trip up there. We are one of the sponsors of the Iditarod. Our part is that we provide the wine for the Iditarod," said Schade.

By way of South Dakota native and former Iditarod competitor Vern Halter, Schade winery has been shipping more than 50 cases of wine to Anchorage each year.

"We get asked all the time how did you get involved with the Iditarod? How did you become the wine sponsor of the Iditarod," Schade said.

What's kept the Schade's involved is pretty simple.

"Probably the relationships that we've built."

Alaska's scenic views and the actual race likely don't hurt either.

If you are interested in supporting the Iditarod but can't make the trip to Alaska, bottles of the commemorative wine may be purchased online at
