On Wednesday night, the South Dakota House on a 50-20 vote approved the creation of a South Dakota Athletic Commission which would oversee boxing, kickboxing and Mixed Martial Arts competitions in the state.
The South Dakota Senate previously approved the idea, but the measure...known as Senate Bill 84, will return to the Senate for review following a minor change made in the House. The Senate is expected to again approve the measure before sending it to Governor Dennis Daugaard for his signature.
Daugaard is on record as opposing the idea, saying the creating of a commission would equal the state giving it's blessing to the MMA-style competition being held here. Sioux Falls State Representative Steve Hickey is also opposed to MMA, going so far as to call it the "child porn" of sports.
