INDIANAPOLIS--Trevor Gruis scored a season-high 26 points and Juevol Myles added 18 more to lead South Dakota to an 87-69 win against IUPUI at The Jungle Thursday. It is the second win a row for the Coyotes (10-18, 5-11 Summit), who have double-digit wins in all 25 seasons under head coach Dave Boots.
Mitchell Patton made 12 of 16 shots and scored 24 points to lead the Jaguars (6-24, 1-14), who have lost 14 consecutive games. IUPUI shot 48 percent from the floor but made 5 of 15 three-pointers and was outscored 20-4 at the free-throw line.
South Dakota led by as many as 14 points in the first half and never trailed. Myles' 14 points and Gruis' 13 offset Patton's 16 at the break. The Coyotes made 15 of 17 free throws in the opening stanza and led 47-38 at halftime.
The lead remained nine, 68-59, with less than nine minutes to go. A 17-5 South Dakota run spanning the game's next five minutes sealed the win. Jordan Boots, who earned his first start of the season in place of point guard Brandon Bos (illness), made back-to-back three's during the rally and tied his season-high with 11 points.
Gruis had 13 points, five rebounds and four assists in the second half alone. It was the first time he had eclipsed 20 points since the season opener against Southern. His 10 made field goals tied his career high and he was 6 of 6 from the line.
Myles had a season-high seven rebounds and dished out five assists to go with his 18 points. The Coyotes shot 50 percent (30 of 60) from the floor and outrebounded IUPUI 38-32. Casey Kasperbauer made two of USD's seven three-pointers and had 13 points.
South Dakota wraps up its regular season at 7 p.m. Saturday against Western Illinois (20-6, 12-3) in Macomb, Ill. A USD win or a Kansas City loss at IUPUI would make the Coyotes the No. 6 seed in next weekend's Summit League Tournament in Sioux Falls, S.D.
VERMILLION, S.D. – In her first game back from injury, Margaret McCloud recorded her third double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds to lead the South Dakota women past Omaha 50-39.
The Coyotes (15-14, 10-6), who ended the regular season with three straight wins, will be the third seed in the Summit League Tournament in Sioux Falls. They wrapped up that seed when Fort Wayne (12-15, 8-7) lost to Western Illinois (13-15, 6-9) 73-54 earlier in the night.
Despite sitting out the last three games, McCloud went 5-for-7 shooting, blocked three shots and dished out a pair of assists. Nicole Seekamp led USD in scoring with 11 points, while Tempestt Wilson added nine points. Alexis Yackley grabbed eight rebounds.
Paige Frauendorfer led Omaha (16-11, 6-9) in scoring with 12 points and Stacia Gebers added 10 points. Carolyn Blair-Mobley led the Mavericks in rebounds with 11.
The Coyotes outscored the Mavericks 13-6 over the last 10 minutes of the game to extend their winning streak over Omaha to eight straight. Omaha has not beaten South Dakota since a 57-56 win on March 1, 2006.
South Dakota outrebounded Omaha 48-34 and held the Mavericks scoreless from beyond the 3-point arc (0-for-8). USD also kept Omaha off the foul line, committing a season low nine fouls and limiting Omaha to four free throw attempts (3-for-4).
The Coyotes will play the sixth seed in the Summit League Tournament at the Sioux Falls Arena on March 10. The game will start at 2:30 p.m. They will play North Dakota State (10-17, 6-9), Western Illinois or Kansas City (9-19, 5-10).
