Sioux Falls Izaak Walton chapter the most energy efficient building in South Dakota

Posted: Updated:

The building that houses the Izaak Walton League's Sioux Falls chapter has been named the most energy efficient building in the state.

After receiving the award the chapter was recognized in the February issue of Outdoor America magazine. The chapter received the award after it replaced 64 light canisters with LED light fixtures, resulting in savings of $1,692 each year.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, traditional incandescent light bulbs are only 10 percent efficient—the other 90 percent of the electricity used is lost as heat.

Phil Hegg, who also serves on the League's Energy and Environment Committee, told Outdoor America that the building's energy provider estimated that they were saving the environment 22,686 pounds of carbon dioxide annually, by switching to LED bulbs.

The chapter debuted the lights with a conservation open house. The proclamation made by South Dakota Governor Dennis Daugaard is now hanging on a wall in the Sioux Falls chapter's house.
