After an extended political battle, the House passed the Violence Against Women Act.
Many Republicans had opposed the bill because of concerns over new protections for gays and lesbians and expanded authority of tribal courts.
But 87 Republicans joined Democrats to re-authorize the 1994 act which provides funding to help prosecute sexual assault and domestic abuse crimes.
President Obama called the passage an example of how Washington can work together. "That is a big win for not just women but for families and for the American people. It's a law that's going to save lives and help more Americans live free from fear."
Democrat's had framed the debate over the expired anti-violence law as another example of GOP policy that is hostile to women.
President Obama won 55% of the women's vote in the last election.
