They are some of the rarest diseases in the world and for the last two days, they have been under review at the Sanford Center in Sioux Falls.
Nationally recognized researchers gathered for Sanford's 3rd annual Rare Disease Symposium.
You may be surprised to know that some groundbreaking research is happening right here in Sioux Falls. Dr. David Pearce is a researcher with Sanford's Children's Health Research Center and he tells us, "I work on a rare children's disease called Batten Disease. its a neurological disease where children lose their vision and they go blind and then they gradually decline in their mental and motor capacities to the point where they will be in a vegetative state and unfortunately it is a universally fatal disease."
Pearce tells us a clinical trial will soon begin on a treatment that may slow the progress of Batten Disease.
