The Brandon Fire Department was called to a small fire around 1:00 Monday morning. They say they had to be extra cautious during the call because of slick roads and sidewalks.
Crews were called to the Helping Hand Assisted Living Center on Teakwood Street in Brandon around 1:00 Morning morning.
When crews arrived they found a room full of thick black smoke. The Brandon Fire Department says it looks like the fire started from a cigarette can that had a butt inside it that was still smoldering. No one was inside the smoke filled room and the building did not need to be evacuated. With our road conditions getting icy through the early morning fire crews say they did need to be careful on icy roads and sidewalks. They tell us they bring ice cleats that crews can attach to their boots. They also carry sand on the trucks that they can spread around on icy sidewalks.
No one was hurt and the room only took on minor smoke damage. Crews want to remind everyone to make sure you properly put out your cigarettes. If you use a cigarette container they recommend putting sand at the bottom of it to help make sure you fully extinguish the cigarette.
