Suspect in homeless homicide drops plea

Posted: Updated:

A homeless man accused of being an accomplice in a homicide has changed his mind about his plea.

Clint Cottonwood, 52, and Eugene Martin, 44, are charged with murdering Robert Wayne Thunderhawk, 45, on May 3, 2012. Police say the three were drinking at a homeless camp in northeast Sioux Falls, near the 1100 block of N. Cliff Avenue, where Thunderhawk was murdered. Police accuse Martin of using a shovel to kill Thunderhawk.

Cottonwood was expected to enter a plea on Wednesday. However, Minnehaha County State's Attorney Aaron McGowan said the plea did not occur. McGowan was not in the courtroom but another attorney told him about the matter on Wednesday.

"He (Cottonwood) and his attorney needed additional time to talk," McGowan said.

McGowan said another hearing will be set for Cottonwood. McGowan also said Martin's case is still pending.
