Preparations underway, new court floor, for Summit League event

Posted: Updated:

Preparations are underway for the Summit League Tournament, which kicks off this weekend. The event is expected to draw more than 40,000 people as the Summit's men's and women's basketball teams vie for trips to the NCAA tournament.

Tournament officials held a press conference to unveil new developments of this year's big event.

Leaders with the Sioux Falls Arena, Summit League, Sports Authority and MidContinent Communications are thrilled to kick off what is sure to be a successful tournament weekend.

Last year's numbers set a record: more than 40,200 tickets were sold. This year, already 30,000 have been sold two days ahead of the first game.

When it comes to the impact this event has on Sioux Falls, tournament officials say you can't put a dollar figure on the national exposure of this league and this city which ultimately becomes a win-win for everyone.

"When you have the fan base that the Dakota schools have, the passion, following their institutions, we felt this is where it could be the better draw," Summit League Commissioner Tom Douple said.

Aside from the excitement of this year's tournament, the countdown is on for the new Denny Sanford PREMIER Center. If this tournament doesn't already have great things for this city, having 6,000 more seats to fill and people to host, they say, will be nothing short of a big win in March, 2015.
