Watertown playing host to the State A Girls Basketball Tournament this weekend, but it's also playing host to Mother Nature's wrath.
Freezing rain began falling just after 6:00 Friday night, and by 10:00 everything in town was covered with a thick layer of ice, making the streets and sidewalks very slick.
Basketball fans and players from all across the state are in Watertown this weekend and the Street Department is making sure they are as safe as possible.
"With all of our visitors in town we want to get them around safely, safely back to their hotels and eating establishments," said Jeff Riley with the Watertown Street Department.
Finding an open room could be a challenge, though, which is why Groton sent their high school band home early from the tournament.
"You know you've got a 40-piece band in a bus with no other contingency plan of where to stay in case you do get snowed in or iced in," said Wayne Carney with the South Dakota High School Athletic Association.
The Street Department will continue salting emergency routes through Saturday, paying special attention to the areas around the high school and hotels.
