State Tournament and weather conditions fill Watertown hotels

Posted: Updated:

The Northern part of the state saw the bulk of ice and snow Saturday. In Watertown many fans battled the rain, snow and ice to make it to the State Class A Girls Basketball Tournament.

The rain and ice began just after six Friday night, leaving a thick layer of ice on the roads and vehicles.  Many fans leaving the tournament Friday night decided to spend the night in Watertown instead of trying to drive home in the rain.

"We made plans to stay just in case because they were predicting weather," said Clark basketball mom Mari Jo Alexander.

Tournament fans who didn't book in advance had a hard time finding a room,

"We were full last night so we had lots of people here," said Ann Clyatt with Watertown's Super 8.

It's why Groton sent their high school band home early Friday night.

"You know you've got a 40 piece band in a bus with no other contingency plan of where to stay in case you do get snowed in or iced in," said Wayne Carney, the Executive Director of the South Dakota High School Activities Association.

The visitors in town for the tournaments also caused some problems for other travelers who were stranded in town due to the weather.

"With the tournaments and stuff going on we went to three other hotels and the Super 8 happened to have two and we ended up in a King size room with five girls," said Jacky
Kloos from Gary, South Dakota.

Kloos was in Watertown for her daughter's 12th birthday party; getting stranded and cramped into one hotel room made a very memorable birthday party for the birthday girl and her friends.
