The City of Sioux Falls and representatives with Walmart have made their big announcement—to build two new superstores on opposite ends of Sioux Falls.

Officials with the City of Sioux Falls and representatives of Walmart announced plans to build two new superstores in Sioux Falls, one at 85th Street and Minnesota Avenue and the other at 60th Street North and Marion Road.

City officials say the plan is to annex Walmart's 85th Street and Minnesota Avenue location into the city. Sioux Falls Mayor Mike Huether says it is unprecedented for a city to open two Walmart supercenters at the same time.

Walmart expects to hire approximately 500 associates to staff the new stores. Full- and part-time positions will be available in all areas of the store, including supervisory positions. As of January 31, 2013, Walmart's average wage for full-time hourly associates in South Dakota is $12.81 per hour.

Walmart says its growth in Sioux Falls also means potential opportunities for local suppliers. In FY12, Walmart spent more than $100 million with South Dakota suppliers, helping support nearly 12,000 supplier jobs. Supplier data is courtesy of Dun & Bradstreet.

For residents who want to learn more about the proposed projects, Walmart will host an open house on Thursday, March 21 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Sioux Falls Convention Center, 1101 N. West Avenue, Sioux Falls.

KSFY News spoke with both Mayor Huether and director of community development Darrin Smith. On Sunday, Smith said there was more to the announcement than what it seems. Some shoppers were excited to find out what and where a new superstore would be built.
