Papal conclave to begin selection process on Tuesday

Posted: Updated:

Bishop Swain celebrated mass at St. Joseph Cathedral at noon to pray for the election of a new pope.

The bishop said he prays the holy spirit will guide the work of the cardinals in their selection of a new pontiff.

Meantime in Rome, the cardinals who will elect the new pope decided to wrap up their pre-conclave discussions.

The 115 cardinals will try to elect the next pope tomorrow.

Once inside the Sistine Chapel, the participants will take an oath of secrecy and then be given ballots with the words "I elect as supreme pontiff" written in Latin. Cardinal Wilfred Napier says, "When you go with your ballot paper in your hand and hold it up in front of the altar and say I call on the Lord Jesus who will be my judge. That's really a moment of intense I say emotion."

Vatican observers say even without a clear front-runner, there are indications the cardinals are going into the conclave with a good idea of their top picks.

Black smoke will signal the vote didn't achieve the majority... white smoke will mean the cardinals have elected a new pope.
