They're known as the Lost Boys - nearly 4,000 children offered a place to live in the U-S following unrest in their home country of Sudan.
Many of those boys found a new home here, in South Dakota and cities like Sioux Falls.
Now one of those lost boys, David Jal has written a book called David's Journey.
It recounts his journey from Sudan to Sioux Falls.
Today he visited the 4th graders at Cleveland Elementary, to talk about the book and share photos.
Student Nelson Freeman says it was fun to meet the author of a book they've been reading. "I learned that David Jal went through many things through his life and it was kind of interesting to learn things of what he did."
Jal has been living in South Dakota since the mid-90s.
