RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) - The outgoing commander of Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota is getting a high-ranking position in the Defense Department.

President Barack Obama has appointed Col. Mark Weatherington to work at the Pentagon as an assistant to Deputy Defense Secretary Ashton Carter. In his position he will oversee the daily business of the department.

Weatherington will be replaced at Ellsworth by Col. Kevin Kennedy, the director of the Air Force Strategic Studies Group at the Pentagon. He previously served at Ellsworth.

Weatherington has served as commander of the 28th Bomb Wing at Ellsworth the past two years. A change-of-command ceremony is set for April 5.
