Celebrate St. Patrick's Day Safely

Posted: Updated:

Lt. Jerome Miller with the Sioux Falls Police Department says some people just stop thinking on St. Patrick's Day. He says he expects that some people just won't listen and will get behind the wheel after they've been drinking.

Through a Highway Safety Grant the Sioux Falls Police Department will have 16 additional officers, in 16 additional squad cars, on Saturday. Again that is in addition to the typical amount of officers that would be out on a Saturday.

Lt. Miller says the officers will have two primary focuses. They will be looking for impaired drivers and speed violations. Lt. Miller says they are expecting big crowds for the St. Patrick's Day events in Sioux Falls. He says these additional officers will be watching for drinking violations at the parade in downtown Sioux Falls and then will head out for a night time saturation patrol from about 4:00pm until about 1:00am.

He says he wants people to head out and enjoy everything St. Patrick's Day has to offer, but he wants people to be smart about it. He says people should make arrangements to make sure they won't be drinking and driving.
