Our Touchstone Energy Scholar of the Week is Michaela Derby, a senior at Estelline.
Michaela has an impressive 4.03 grade point average and we went looking to find out the secret of her success.
So how does someone get above a 4.0 grade point average?
Well, part of it is tackling tough classes that allow for extra work and Michaela Derby definitely has those. "I start the day off with Chemistry and then I go to Band and then I have Advanced Bio and Anatomy and then Art and then I have Chorus and English and Personal Finance and Calculus."
And while all of that is a handful, it is the advanced science classes that stand out in terms of their toughness and Michaela says they feature prominently in her schedule for a good reason. "Advanced Bio and Chemistry and Anatomy are three biggies. They'll help me in college cause I'll be exploring the sciences a lot."
And what goes hand in hand with complicated science is complicated math.Mark Kreie is Michaela's math teacher. "She's a real good student in class. She's in Calculus right now which says alone that she's a really good student because she is able to handle that and she's getting A's in there so ...."
She's getting A's in Calculus and in everything else. Good grades get attention and right now, Michaela says she is trying to decide where she will end up going to college.....and listen to her possible choices. "SDSU, Stanford, Rice and Dartmouth are all still in the running. So I guess it will just be whether I want to stay close to home or go far away. I plan on majoring in biology."
And for being named our Touchstone Energy Scholar of the Week, Michaela will receive a $100 scholarship from HD Electric Cooperative, which is a local Touchstone Energy cooperative.
