Falls Park incident weighs heavy on hearts, minds during parade

Posted: Updated:

While the 34th annual St. Patrick's Day Parade was underway, thousands gathered in the downtown area to catch a glimpse of the dozens of floats.

While doing so, many told KSFY the incident at Falls Park that left two missing, now dead, has surely weighed heavy on their hearts and minds, Saturday.

"I feel sorry for the families who have lost the 16 year old and the family with the 28 year old," Michelle Heckel said. "Most of us are thinking about that. It's a day you'd want to be hanging out with your loved ones and to think they're not going to be here for it."

"It's hard to think it could be you and your family at any moment," Heckel said.

"It's nice to see community support around it, people thinking about it. Divers have showed up to help. Shows a lot about the people in this area  helping them out," Matt Lame said.

The annual lighting of the falls was canceled, this weekend, due to the search efforts Friday and Saturday. The annual St. Patty's run was also changed so it did not go through Falls Park.

Falls Park has since been reopened to the public, Saturday afternoon.
