Visitors return to Falls Park after tragedy

Posted: Updated:

It's the first full day falls park is open to the public since last week's tragedy at the Falls.

It was a more than 36-hour operation to recover two of the bodies that went into the river Thursday night.

Crews have since recovered two bodies, Madison Wallace, 16, and Lyle Eagle Tail, 28.

KSFY News spoke to people visiting Falls Park Sunday.

It was a very quiet day out at the park. There were several people who braved the cooler temps to come out to Falls Park.

But even though the park was quiet, you could still feel a sense of urgency in the cold air.

A Sunday afternoon in the park is supposed to be a fun way to spend the day.

But with the recent recovery of two bodies from the Big Sioux, this was not a typical Sunday.

And Falls Park doesn't look or feel the same as it usually does.

Muddy paths, broken concrete, and cranes.

Some people who came out to the park today, heard the news about last week's tragedy at the Falls and wanted to take a look for themselves up close where it all happened.

Park visitor Beth Schlecht said "it's very sobering. It's very sad. I pray for the family and all the people involved. It just shows you the brevity of life. You never are sure from one day to the next. Things can happen even with your best intentions."

Another park visitor, Kathy Haese said "I guess life goes on, even losing such a young life. It still goes on and you have to go on for that."

We spoke with many people who didn't want to go on camera but said they were curious about what happened at the Falls.

And most people had the same reaction as Kathy and Beth, they just thought it's an incredibly sad story, a tragic accident.
