Four Walmarts in Sioux Falls; how do we compare to other cities?

Posted: Updated:

Just a week after Walmart announced plans to build two new supercenters in Sioux Falls, a petition has surfaced to stop construction.
Those behind the petition say more big-box retail stunts small business growth.
So where does Sioux Falls stack up when it comes to Walmart growth?

Nearly 154,000 people live in Sioux Falls.
With four stores, that's about one store for every 38,000 people.

Now take a look at how Sioux Falls compares to other cities along the I-29 corridor.
Up the road in Fargo, they have three stores.
Its population is nearly 106,000 people.
That's approximately one store for every 35,000 people.

Just an hour south of us in Sioux City there are three supercenters. That's about one store for every 28,000 people.

Head just a few hours south to Omaha, and it's the same story.
While they have more stores -- eleven to be exact, there's one for ever 37,000 people.

We asked Walmart if those numbers prompted the company to increase its presence in Sioux Falls.
We're still waiting for a response and when we hear back from them, we'll let you know.
