Iowa maximum security prison in lockdown

Posted: Updated:

The Iowa State Penitentiary in Fort Madison is under a lockdown because of a security breach.

Fred Scaletta, executive officer for the Iowa Department of Corrections, says all 560 inmates in the prison's maximum-security unit have been confined to their cells since last week. The lockdown does not affect inmates in the medium-security unit or the clinical unit.

The Des Moines Register reports staff and inmates are safe and there are no reports of violent incidents.

Scaletta says officials are searching the facility after contraband items were found. He declined to elaborate.

The Iowa State Penitentiary holds many inmates serving life sentences for murder, rape or kidnapping. A construction project is under way to build a new 800-bed maximum-security prison. It will open in January 2014.
