Early morning house fire in Baltic

Posted: Updated:

Around 1:45 Wednesday morning a neighbor called in a fire burning at a home located at 100 2nd Street in Baltic. When Baltic fire crews arrived they said the home was already fully engulfed in flames. The Baltic Fire Chief told us he believes the home has been abandoned for several years.

The Baltic Fire Department and several other crews worked together to keep the fire contained to just the house. Dell Rapids Fire and Minnehaha County Emergency Management were also on the scene. Crews did not enter the home and fought the fire from the outside. The Fire Chief tells us the cold presented another obstacle. Crews had to be careful of ice forming on the ground, lines freezing, and hypothermia. Trucks on scene were also used to make sure crews were staying warm. Xcel Energy was also called to the scene to turn off some live wires that were still running power to the home.

The cause of the fire is still unknown. The home has completely burned to the ground. As of 7:00am Wednesday morning Baltic Fire crews were still on scene keeping an eye on spots that are still smoldering.
