Gov Daugaard approves state budget; blocks 1 part

Posted: Updated:

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - South Dakota Gov. Dennis Daugaard has approved the $4.1 billion state budget passed by the Legislature, but he vetoed a part that directs how some money will be distributed to the state's four technical schools.

The governor says he does not object to giving the money to the technical institutes, but the directions for distributing the money should be taken out of the budget bill.

The lawmakers made few changes in the governor's recommended budget for the year beginning July 1. It provides 3 percent increases in ongoing spending to K-12 schools, universities, state workers' paychecks and the facilities that provide medical care to the poor in the Medicaid program.

The Legislature also approved separate bills giving extra money on a one-time basis to schools and medical providers.
