New law restricts teens from using cell phones while driving

Posted: Updated:

Parents of teenagers are constantly worried about their safety when they're out and about on their own.

Wednesday, the governor signed a new law designed to keep teens safe while out on the road.

KSFY News asked young people what they think about this new law.

And it varies. We spoke with two sisters at Washington High School.

A twenty-year old who was picking up her younger sister.

They think the new law banning cell phone use by teens is a good idea but realize many others might not agree.

Getting out of school and into your car is an exciting time of day for many high school students.

The governor signed a bill into law today which makes it illegal for younger teen drivers to use mobile devices behind the wheel.

We spoke with one sixteen-year-old who doesn't have her license yet but says other teens don't think too much about the new law.

Tayler Hillestad, 16, said "they think it's stupid because people don't think it's going to happen to them and that they're going to crash, so they're paying attention to their phone...yeah."

Tayler's older sister Tori said "I think it's a really good idea. Just because there's already so many accidents. Granted, they're all different ages, where they're happening from a bunch of different people but I mean, you've got to start somewhere."

The new law bans teen drivers from using cell phones when behind the wheel, at least until they get their unrestricted licenses at sixteen.

Since the city of Sioux Falls implemented

Its texting and driving ban in September, the police have issued 11 tickets.

All of the people who received citations were over 18.
