There is a song that says there are angels among us. This story proves that. It's about a young girl in rural Mexico....who had a bad heart and no real way to get it fixed. But that's when an angel stepped into her life.....someone she didn't know...who made it possible for her to come to Sioux Falls to get her heart repaired. That man is a household name....and today, Perla got to meet him....in Sioux Falls.
She is the shy young woman with the shy smile. She doesn't know much English. The language she is most versed in is Spanish. But a language barrier is nothing when it comes up against a spirit of caring....that sense of reaching out and helping someone else...simply because it is the right thing to do. Perla knows all about that...thanks to this man.
"It's just such an extraordinary life event when you can when you can be fortunate enough when you can participate in helping save lives." That man....is Olympic legend....figure skater Scott Hamilton. Who heard of Perla's story and donated money to a medical outreach group in Mexico called "The Los Cabos Children's Foundation". That donation allowed Perla to get the surgery she needed to repair her heart. If that donation wasn't made......and that surgery didn't happen....Perla would be very sick if not worse. But Perla's fortunes changed and as a result...she is able to celebrate her 15th birthday...which is today. In the Latino culture, it is referred to as a Quinceañera....the day she becomes a woman. And it's not just Perla and her family who are grateful she is here....so is Scott Hamilton. "To be here today and to celebrate a birthday is extraordinary. it just fills my heart."
And from Scott's heart to Perla's heart.....a living example of how one person can make an amazing difference.
