South Dakota State Fans gathered together all around Sioux Falls Saturday to cheer on the girls at the NCAA tournament, but a few fans also took advantage of their last chance to eat and watch SDSU play at Champps Sports Bar & Grill.
"I came here many years ago for the first time, probably about when it opened, it's always been a good place to gather," said SDSU grad Mark Berg.
For the past 22 years, sports fans have gathered at Champps on 41st and Western to cheer on their team.
"A few of us actually just met up here on Thursday for lunch and the NCAA games were just kicking off," said Jack Rabbit fan Brock Hyde.
For one group of SDSU fans, watching the Jacks play at Champs during the NCAA tournament has been a yearly tradition over the past five years.
"We came here last year and I the year before to watch this exact game, so it's kind of a tradition for us," said Michelle Trent.
That tradition came to an end Saturday as fans watched their last SDSU game at Champps before it closes on March 31st.
"I actually thought they were already closed, but he said they were still open, so here we are watching our last game at Champps," said Jason Trent.
"I figured its one of the last times I can come here before they are closed, and it's a great place," said Berg.
The loss of Champps will also be felt by employees and regular diners who must say farewell to the restaurant after 22 years of patronage.
"This is one of my sister's favorite restaurants; she actually had her reception here for her wedding in that banquet room," said Jacob Ambrosius, a long-time Champps customer and employee. "I'm going to miss it, this has been my job for a really long time and like I said I've really enjoyed the people that I've worked with."
While there won't be any more SDSU games at Champps, you can still grab a meal and catch a little more of March Madness; the restaurant will be open until March 31st.
