ABC News, others say Senator Tim Johnson to announce retirement Tuesday
Senator Tim Johnson will hold a news conference Tuesday afternoon in Vermillion, to discuss his future political plans.
According to ABC News and Reuters News Agency, Johnson, the chairman of the U.S. Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban affairs will announce his retirement.
Johnson's news conference will be held at his alma mater, the University of South Dakota at 3:00pm.
Questions surrounding whether the three-term Democratic senator would seek re-election have been swirling for months. There is speculation that if the 66-year-old doesn't run, his son, Brendan, might. Brendan Johnson is currently the U.S. Attorney in South Dakota.
Former South Dakota Gov. Mike Rounds has announced he is seeking the Republican nomination for the Senate seat now held by Johnson.
