Save Spellerberg petition collects 7,000 signatures against pool

Posted: Updated:

Considering our cool spring weather, a dip in an outdoor pool doesn't sound good right now.

The city of Sioux Falls has been looking at building an indoor pool which could make swimming possible for more people and all weather conditions.

KSFY News spoke with some people who would like to see the pool, but not in their backyard.

They're not exactly against it, they just don't want the pool in their neighborhood.

The group 'Save Spellerberg' has collected more than 7,000 signatures.

They want to put it to a vote to prevent an indoor pool being built in their neighborhood.

The people who live around Spellerberg Park also have the VA Hospital in their neighborhood.

They say it already brings a lot of traffic and they don't need any more.

In fact, the VA says it's main concern is for the welfare of it's veterans.

But some are worried about the new pool could make it more difficult to gain access or a loss of parking at the VA.

One neighbor who signed the petition says she's glad she did and hopes it's successful.

Sharon Stich said "I think the congestion, the parking, I mean we have problems with parking as it is. Just to take everything that's been here for so long, it would break my heart to see that go. I'm just against it, that's all.... I did sign the petition and I'm glad I did so hopefully it doesn't go through."

Save Spellerberg plans to announce the next steps it will take with its petition.

We spoke with a few neighbors in the area and most were happy to hear so many signatures were collected.

Many don't want an indoor pool built in what they say is an already busy area.
