Sioux Falls School District honors teacher of the year
Out of 1,625 teachers in the Sioux Falls School District, 34 teachers were nominated for teacher of the year.
"It's the most we've had in any recent memory, so that tells us that we have a lot of great teachers out there," said DeeAnn Konrad, the community relations coordinator for the SFSD.
Five were selected as finalists. Then, Allison Hutchinson's name was called.
A biomedical science teacher at the Career and Technical Education Academy, Hutchinson was pleasantly surprised.
"Watching a great teacher teach is just so amazing and inspiring," said. "I don't know how the nomination committee picked a final winner, but they had a tough job."
Criteria for teacher of the year includes: meeting the students' needs, impacting student achievement, and a commitment to lifelong learning.
"She's very passionate about her profession and about science. And, she really wants to ignite it in the hearts of the students she serves," said Konrad.
Hutchinson thinks humor helps too.
"When I send my kids out on an internship or job shadow we have a little sit-down talk, and I tell them to make me look good. So, tomorrow I can go to school and let them know they've definitely accomplished their goals."
