Charity battles local business over parking lot

Posted: Updated:

How many times have we looked for a parking spot and opted to park in a space of a business we had no plans of entering?

One local business found itself caught up in the middle of a parking lot war.

It asked to use a nearby parking lot, but didn't get the answer it hoped for.

The sign reads 'Do Not Park at U-Haul, management says no to our charity.

The charity?

The new Brennan Rock and Roll Academy.

But U-Haul explains that's not quite how the story goes.

You may have seen this sign driving down 11th street and wondered what's it all about.

The Rock and Roll Academy is holding a big charity event for the Boys and Girls Club.

Chuck Brennan asked the neighboring business across the street, U-Haul, if he could use its parking lot for the event.

He thought everything would be fine.

"We said we would insure your parking lot. We would put parkers there. We'll clean your parking lot. We'll help you move the trucks around. We'll pay you. We'll give you tickets, whatever you want. I wanted it safe, so we could put crossing guards literally at the street here going across. and it was met with absolute 'no,'" Brennan said.

Shawn Odden, U-Haul of Fargo President said "typically, we don't have a problem letting a charity use our parking lots but just unfortunately he didn't follow the correct channels or give us adequate time to go through the proper protocol."

Brennan claims he's done a lot of business with U-Haul nationwide and has never had a problem until now.

While U-haul states it's a twenty-four seven business and needed more notice to tell its customers they might need to find someplace else to park.
