It is one of the big centers of commerce in Sioux Falls: the Empire Mall.
People come from all over to shop and just to see the place.
Well what folks will be seeing over the next 8 months will be a change in the mall, from the familiar setting we see now to something more modern and updated.
And to get all this work done, the mall is doing something a little different.
It is the look and the sounds of construction as workers begin the process of remodeling the Empire Mall. And it is designed to be a top to bottom operation.
"All the ceilings, all the floors, all the restrooms, all the entrances, Center Court being demoed and a new play area." Jennifer Morrison is the marketing director at the Empire Mall and she says this place, already one of the city's jewels, will shine even brighter over the next couple months.
But you won't likely see the actual work being done.....because we were here at 2AM.
Yes, all the construction work is being done....in the middle of the night.
"We needed to be open all day so being in construction all night makes a lot of sense." Dennis Gilliam is the Empire Mall's general manager and says shoppers won't want to come to the mall if it is noisy and dusty and messy.
So they're going to try to keep shoppers away from that...by not doing the work when shoppers are around. "The main thing is the customer experience. we always go back to that because what we want to do is make sure that when our customers walk in the door they want to be here, they enjoy being here and they spend a lot of money while they're here."
And Gilliam tells us, he believes new retailers will want to be a part of a newer mall, which is one of the reasons for the big re-design.
And over the next couple months, you'll be able to see the changes as they take shape. "It's fun to not only see it at night but come in the next day and see what's been done the night before."
And all the remodeling work at the Empire Mall should be done by this November.
